Elderly woman critical after being struck down by speeding car

An 85-year-old woman is critical after she was struck down by an alleged speeding car while attempting to cross the La Grange Public Road, West Bank Demerara (WBD), on Saturday.
The injured woman has been identified as Latchmini Bisnauth of Independence Street, La Grange, WBD. Based on information received, the accident occurred at about 15:55h on the La Grange Public Road, WBD, and involved a motor car driven by a 38-year-old man of Westminster, La Parfaite Harmonie, WBD.
Reports are that the motor car was proceeding south along the eastern side of the La Grange Public Road, WBD, at a fast rate of speed.
According to the driver of the motor car, the pensioner was attempting to cross the road from West to East and walked into the path of his vehicle. As a result, he applied brakes but the front centre of his car struck Bisnauth, who fell onto the roadway.
She was picked up in a conscious state by the driver of the said motor car and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) where she was seen and examined by a doctor on duty.
Bisnauth was treated for a fractured left arm and hip. Meanwhile, the driver of the motor car was subsequently arrested and remains in custody.
A breathalyser test was done, but no trace of alcohol was found in his system. Investigations are ongoing.
