The Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) has announced the reopening of the Leguan Stelling to the public and traffic, following the completion of emergency works.
According to T&HD, the contractor, S Maraj Contracting Services, carried out two days of corrective works on the section of the stelling which collapsed on December 10. General Manager of T&HD, Marcelene Merchant had previously informed that rehabilitation works at one section of the stelling was already ongoing at the time of the partial collapse of the other. This resulted in a halt of operations in the best interest of the travelling public and attention was placed on the section that needed immediate emergency works.
Meanwhile, Junior Minister within the Public Infrastructure Ministry, Jaipaul Sharma had blamed the delayed start of repairs on the aged structure on a number of setbacks which were not unidentified. As such, works only recommenced about two months ago, over one year since the contract was awarded.
This newspaper has previously reported that the stelling, which is inconveniencing residents in the area, is the main exit and entry point onto the island.
