Hosted by the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF), the four-day event is an annual competition that brings together junior players aged seven to twenty, all eager to showcase their skills over the board. While the GCF hosted shorter rapid-format tournaments for age-category championships earlier this year, the National Junior Qualifiers transition to the prestigious classical format. Players will compete under a 90-minute time control, with a 30-second increment added from move one. This longer format offers a true test of endurance and strategy, giving competitors ample time to calculate deep lines of attack. The seven-round tournament will follow the Swiss system, with two rounds played daily at 09:00h and 14:00h.
For the first time, this year’s tournament will be divided into two categories, designed to give both seasoned competitors and rising new talents a chance to shine. The Group A division will feature experienced players battling over the board for the top nine positions and the right to challenge the reigning National Junior Chess Champion. Open to all players under 20, this seasoned group is expected to be fiercely contested by Guyana’s finest young talent, some of whom are currently preparing for the upcoming Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan and the XXXIV Pan American Youth Festival in Colombia.
Meanwhile, Group B will see emerging players competing for the title of Group Champion. The GCF has extended its reach to numerous schools and outreach programmes over the past year, which is expected to yield a larger turnout at this year’s tournament. Prizes for Group A qualification for the top nine finishers to the 2026 National Junior Chess Championship, along with trophies for the Best Female player, Best U14, and Best U12, while Group B will feature a Champion’s trophy, Second through Fifth place trophies, and awards for the Best U10 and Best U8 Male and Female players. Additionally, First to Third place trophies will be awarded to players from priority area schools. The tournament will be supervised by FIDE Arbiter, Mr John Lee and his team of arbiters.
The top twelve boards will be broadcast live on Lichess.org, while pairings and standings will be published on Chess-results.com. EnerMech Guyana, investing in Guyanese talent for the future in Guyana, for Guyana, is a proud sponsor of the National Chess Championships. The GCF would like to thank EnerMech for their support of chess and for investing in Guyanese talent. A special thank you is also extended to the Guyana Olympic Association for generously providing the venue for this event.
