Enmore businessman busted with vanload of contraband items
A 31-year-old Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD) businessman who breached the Police roadblock at Mahaica on Wednesday was eventually arrested after a quantity of contraband items was found in the vehicle he was driving.
Police stated that on the day in question about 16:45h, a team of Police ranks attached to the Mahaica Police Station was conducting a roadblock exercise in the vicinity of Unity Junction, ECD, randomly stopping and searching vehicles.
However, a van bearing registration number GLL 987 which at the time was being driven by the businessman of Logwood, Enmore, ECD, breached the roadblock at a fast pace.
As a result, ranks gave chase and the van was intercepted at Enmore; a search was then conducted on the vehicle in the presence of the businessman during which a quantity of uncustomed goods was found in black plastic bags.
The items seized included 11 boxes of Zenden brand mosquito coil containing 660 packs; three boxes of Atlanta cigarettes containing 150 cartons and two boxes of Red Oris cigarettes containing 100 cartons.
During the operation, Police found that all the documents for the van were expired. In addition, the driver only had a valid licence for a motor car.
The businessman and the van, along with the uncustomed goods, were taken to the Enmore Police Station where the items were lodged and the businessman was placed in custody.
The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) was also informed as investigations continue.
