With the aim of enhancing capacity-building efforts, the members of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) are participating in a training seminar on ‘Poverty Reduction and Development’ under the Global Development Initiative (GDI) in the People’s Republic of China. The delegation, led by Commissioner Neaz Subhan, will be in China from October 14 to 31, 2025, for this capacity-building programme hosted by the International Poverty Reduction Centre in China (IPRCC).

During the visit, the team will travel from Beijing to other provinces to understand the ethnic diversity and learn of strategies used to enhance inclusion and development. According to the Commission, “This initiative forms part of the ERC’s ongoing commitment to strengthen its institutional capacity and promote social harmony in Guyana.” The seminar brings together participants from several countries to share knowledge and strategies aimed at addressing social challenges that can threaten peace and cohesion.

Through this engagement, the ERC said it is seeking to deepen its understanding of social development and sustainable growth strategies, which will inform its national programmes and advocacy work. Commissioner Subhan along with Jie Ping, Deputy Director General of IPRCC, were the main guests who addressed the Opening Ceremony. “The ERC expressed sincere appreciation to the Government of China for facilitating this opportunity and for its continued support in fostering global cooperation and knowledge exchange,” a recent missive from the Commission stated. It went on to state that, “The Commission remains steadfast in its constitutional mandate to promote unity and equality among all ethnic groups in Guyana and views this training as a vital contribution to building a more inclusive and harmonious society.” Meanwhile, the ERC team was welcomed to China by the Ambassador of Guyana, Her Excellency Anyin Choo, at the Guyana Embassy in Beijing.
