Social media personality Roopeshwar Mangal, popularly known as “TikTok Uncle,” has been acknowledged by the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) after the Commission concluded its investigation into a social media video that drew public concern. In a statement, the ERC said it had completed its investigation into a TikTok video featuring Mangal. The Commission determined that the video contained language that was racially derogatory, ethnically divisive, and inconsistent with the principles of harmony, mutual respect and dignity that support Guyana’s national identity.
According to the ERC, Mangal acknowledged that the remarks were made while he was under the influence of alcohol, which affected his judgment. In a video shared on social media on Tuesday, Mangal expressed regret for his actions and apologised to those who may have been offended by the comments. “I was making a video last year in November, I didn’t know that the video was going to cause certain impacts, so I asked the ERC to forgive me. I didn’t mean for anyone to take it to heart or feel hurt. One love, one people, one nation, and one destiny. [I] love everyone in God’s mighty name. I apologise, I apologise,” he said.

Mangal also stated that the views expressed in the video made in December last year does not reflect his true character or beliefs and extended an apology to all persons who may have been distressed by the remarks. The ERC welcomed Mangal’s willingness to accept responsibility for his actions and to address the issue publicly through an apology. The Commission reiterated its commitment to promoting harmony, good relations and mutual respect among all communities in Guyana. It also encouraged citizens to exercise responsibility and respect in their public communications, both online and offline. The ERC has consistently called on citizens and public figures to reject divisive rhetoric, combat racial discrimination, and uphold social cohesion, particularly during periods of national significance such as holidays, festivals, and elections.
