For two consecutive years, teams participating in the West Demerara/East Bank Demerara Zone of the Guinness “Greatest of the Streets” Football have found one task impossible to complete; that is stopping Showstoppers from walking away with the title.
Based on their performances this year, they seem even more rampant as is evident after dishing out a 6-0 thumping of West Side Ballers in the semi-finals on Tuesday. Marvin Josiah was ‘Mr Playmaker’ scored a hat-trick and to think the talent in the likes of Stephon Jupiter and Trayon Bobb did not get their names on the score sheet, their final opposition ESPN know they have their work cut out.
ESPN will still be staking their chips high given the pedigree of players they have, notably Pernell Schultz and the Lythcott brothers, Trevon and Kevon. It was Schultz who engineered the surge to the final with goals on either side of the half against Dream Team and the talented attacking player will need to produce all the goods to stop a budding dynasty.
It should a colourful end to the action with the top prize of $400,000 and the championship trophy at stake.
The losing team will take home $200,000 and a trophy, while both teams are automatic qualifiers for the national playoffs.
Apart from the colossal final, the large crowd anticipated to raid the Pouderoyen Tarmac this evening can also look forward to a third-place play-off clash between Dream Team and West Side Ballers; the winners will cart off $100,000 and losers $50,000.
The losing quarter-finalists, Ballers Empire, West-Side Ballers, Rising Stars and Hustlers are expected to play in the plate final with $60,000 up for grabs.
