…bandits caught with $4.8M on New Year’s Day

A 55-year-old businessman of Charity Waterfront, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), was severely chopped by two bandits who robbed him of over $5.8 million in cash and phone cards.
Reports are that at around 22:45h on Old Year’s night, the businessman, Mohammed Khan, was in his business place when one of the suspects approached him and held him at knifepoint.
The other bandit went into the bedroom of the building, where he also resides, and duct-taped his reputed wife, 55-year-old Stephanie Sanchara, to her hands, feet and mouth.
Police said together, the suspects searched the premises and collected a quantity of Digicel and GTT phone cards valued over $1.1 million, and $4,822,641, after which they began to make good their escaped.
Meanwhile, according to the Regional Commander Denise Griffith, Khan managed to free himself when one of the suspects dealt a severe chop to his head and escaped.
However, the businessman was escorted to the Charity Public Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and admitted. He was later transferred to Suddie Hospital in a stable condition.
Police, with assistance from public-spirited citizens, including some members of the Charity Community Policing Group (CPG), cordoned off the area between New Road and Dartmouth backlands where the two suspects fled and a manhunt lasting some five hours led to the suspects being apprehended and taken to the Charity Police Station.
All the cash and items were recovered.
Both suspects, aged 21 and 25, are in custody pending charges.
