Essequibo Coast fire victim dissatisfied over fire report

…says children were never playing with matches

The Aurora Village, Essequibo Coast house on fire

Sherifan Gafoor, the owner of the two-storey house that was completely ravaged by fire at Aurora Village, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), has said that she is tremendously distressed and dissatisfied over claims made by the fire officers at Anna Regina Fire Station. Officers, she said, claimed that the fire was generated by children playing with matches, which according to family members, is incorrect.

“The claims made by the officials are false because the children were outside with me sitting and were nowhere inside the house playing with matches,” Sheridan Gafoor, the grandmother, explained.
The Gafoor family is confident that the fire started from an electrical wire that constantly sparks during windy periods. The family has since called for another investigation to be launched by the fire service since according to them, the Anna Regina Fire Station officials’ claims are misleading and inaccurate.
Additionally, the mother acknowledged that the firefighters came to extinguish the fire but their efforts were futile since they had to source water from a river some distance away and that took quite a long time to set up.
When this publication contacted the head of the Anna Regina Fire Station, he said that he could not comment on the issue since he was in a meeting in Georgetown.
