Essequibo Coast man charged, remanded for gun possession

Cleon Alphonso of Henrietta village, Essequibo Coast was remanded to prison by Charity Magistrate Tamieka Clarke on Monday, after the magistrate assessed his condition and, based on his medical condition, entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf.
A team of police ranks on mobile patrol duty had apprehended the 32-year-old Alphonso in vicinity of the Anna Regina Police Headquarters on April 4 with an unlicensed firearm and one magazine.

The gun that was found during the search

Alphonso had been observed walking on the road, and when stopped and searched by the patrol ranks, the firearm with one magazine that had no ammunition was found on his person. He was questioned whether he was the holder of a firearm licence and he replied “No.” As such, he was arrested and later charged.

He will make his next court appearance on April 30, 2024. The magistrate has instructed that a medical evaluation be done on this accused.
