Essequibo crowned Jaguars League 50-Over Champions

Despite losing their final match against a spirited West Berbice side by 115 runs, Essequibo’s near-perfect run this tournament has seen the men from the Cinderella County being crowned champs of the 50-Over League.

Their final match, in which Essequibo faced West Berbice, took place at Bush Lot. Essequibo won the toss and decided to field. West Berbice took to the crease and mastered an exceptional 278 for 5 in their 50 overs. Half centuries came from Gudakesh Motie (84*) and Javid Karim (74). Opening batsman Leon Andrews supported with 33, while Andrew Dutchin was 39 not out. Bowling for Essequibo, Mark Williams and Akini Adams collected 2 wickets for 45 and 31 runs respectively.
Essequibo then set out to bat, but could not withstand the pressures exerted by West Berbice, and fell for 163 all out in 38.4 overs. Anthony Adams was the only player to score a half-century, with 53 not out, while Kemol Savory gave valuable support with 36. Kevon Boodie also added 27 to the total. Bowling for West Berbice, Kevin Jawahir snared 4 wickets for 40 runs, while Kevin Sinclair and Gudakesh Motie bowled adequately, with 2 wickets for 28 runs each.
In the game in which East Bank came up against West Demerara at Everest, East Bank posted a massive 279 all out in 49.4 overs. Ronaldo Alimohamed scored his second consecutive century with an impressive 101 off 55 balls. Trevon Griffith scored 51 and Darshan Persaud 33. Bowling for West Demerara, Malcolm Hubbard and Mavendra Dhanpaul collected 3 wickets for 42 and 48 runs respectively. Raymon Reifer assisted with 2 for 61. West Demerara, in their reply, comfortably achieved the required runs with an over to spare at 283 for 8 in 49 overs. Raymon Reifer top scored with 68, while Tevin Imlach (51) and Romario Shepherd (51) gave valuable support with their half centuries off the innings. Bowling for East Bank, Alimohamed and Griffith collected 2 wickets each for 55 and 60 runs respectively.
At Enmore, East Coast put up 251 for 7 in 50 overs. Ramnarine Chatura (52), Kamesh Yadram (48) and Chandrapaul Hemraj (44) were the main scorers. Bowling for Upper Corentyne, Eon Hooper picked up 3 for 46 and Demitri Cameron 2 for 53. Upper Corentyne then fell for 144 all out in 35.3 overs. Anthony Bramble top scored with 72, while Shawn Perreira and Andy Mohan each added 18 runs to the scoreboard.
Bhaskar Yadram was the most instrumental bowler for the East Coast side, collecting 4 for 33, while Amir Khan and Kamesh Yadram snared 2 wickets each, for 24 and 8 runs separately.
Georgetown, finishing second in the tournament, whipped up 290 for 4 in their 50 overs. Skipper, Leon Johnson put up a massive 111 not out, which earned him the award for the player with the most runs in the tournament.
Omesh Daniram and Christopher Barnwell also performed creditably in the innings, with 59 and 43 respectively. Bowling for Lower Corentyne, Raun Johnson, Nial Smith, Junior Sinclair and Kelvin Umrao collected a wicket each. Lower Corentyne fought fearlessly, but was unable to reach their target, and closed their innings at 264 all out in 49.1 overs. Sesenarine Sukhu top scored with 47, Junior Sinclair scored 26, and Jason Sinclair 22. Qumar Torrington and Christopher Barnwell picked up 3 for 47 and 2 for 43 respectively.
A presentation ceremony followed at Bush Lot, in which Essequibo walked away with the winning trophy and a sum of money. Gudakesh Motie was awarded Man of the Match; most dismissals in the tournament went to Kemol Savory, who produced 9 dismissals with 176 runs; while most runs went to Leon Johnson, his having attained 336 runs.
