Essequibo Islands advance to district finals

The Essequibo Islands Secondary School boys got their reward for travelling all the way from Wakenaam after they trounced the Parika Salem Secondary by four wickets.
The action came as part of the Guyana Cricket Board/Demerara Mutual Life Assurance Society Limited/National Sports Commission/National Secondary School Cricket League (GCB/DMLAS/NSC/NSSCL).
The two teams met at the Tuschen ground, East Bank Essequibo, where the Parika Salem team opted to bat first after winning the toss.
However, the Parika Salem team had to work hard for their runs due to remarkable performances from a few of the Essequibo Islands bowlers. Ably assisted by their fielders, those bowlers managed to save some crucial runs, which eventually led to the Parika salem team being restricted to just 76 all out from 22 of their 30 allotted overs.
Wazim Mohammed and Travis Christian were Parika’s top scorers with 19 runs each.
Bowling for Essequibo Islands, left-arm spinner Ryan Atkinson grabbed 5 for 12, while Henry Gladwane Jr picked up 3 for 11.
In reply, the touring Essequibo Islands team, adopting a calm and watchful approach to their batting, eventually made it past their target of 77 by the fourth ball of the 20th over, despite being interrupted by the fall of wickets at key intervals. The Essequibo team eventually ended on 79 for 6. Ryan Atkinson was again the shining star for his team, top-scoring with 15.
For Parika’s bowling line-up, Shivraj Mohabir took 2 for 16, while there was one wicket each for Wazim Mohamed, Travis Christian, and Orlando Adolphus.
Owing to this victory, the Essequibo Islands Secondary School will go on to play Essequibo Coast in the Essequibo District finals today.
