Home News Essequibo man acquitted of rape
A 27-year-old man was on Monday acquitted on a rape charge by a 12-member jury.
Troy Tulsaram, a truck driver of Richmond Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast, was on trial for the offence before High Court Judge Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the High Court in Suddie.
It was alleged that on April 23, 2018, in the county of Essequibo, he engaged in sexual penetration of a woman without her consent. Upon his indictment, he pleaded not guilty.
The short facts are that the man and the 18-year-old woman are known to each other.
Tulsaram’s lawyer, Jerome Khan, said the prosecutor contended that his client went over to the woman’s house and raped her. However, the defence counsel disputed the facts.
In so doing, he argued that among other things, the medical examination conducted on the woman did not find any bruises to her vaginal area. State Counsel Tiffini Lyken appeared for the prosecution.
