Essequibo man chopped during drinking spree

A labourer of Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), was on Monday chopped to the face by his drinking buddy during an argument at Anna Regina Squatting Area.
Mortimer Sooknanan, 29, of Centenary Street Queenstown, Essequibo Coast, is reportedly known to the suspect, a 57-year-old miner and on the day in question at about 16:45h, they were seen imbibing.
However, in the midst of them drinking, an argument broke out between them during which the suspect pulled out a knife from his waist and dealt the victim one chop to his left side face.
Following the incident, the victim visited the Anna Regina Police Station where a report was made. He was then issued with a medical form and escorted to the Suddie Hospital by the police, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty.
He was later treated and admitted as a patient in a stable condition.
The suspect was later contacted by the police and arrested after the knife reportedly used in the crime was found on his person.
After interrogation, he admitted to chopping the victim but claimed that he acted in self-defence. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
