Exciting day of horse racing set for KMTC

All roads lead to the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) at Bushlot Farm this Sunday for an exhilarating day of horse racing which is organized by Eon, Quaicy and Keyno in collaboration with the number 28 Bushlot/ Adventure in Action Group.
Turfites will be jumping with excitement during the six events that are scheduled for the day that promises to be nothing short of stiff competition.
The feature event has $450,000 at stake and will bring together horses classified ‘H’ and Lower covering a distance of seven furlongs with a whopping $240,000 going to the winner. The second place finisher will pocket $120,000 while the third and fourth place finishers are guaranteed $60,000 and $30,000 respectively.
The battle lines have been drawn with horse owners rushing for registration. Some of the horses that will be on show are Red Fire, Red Jet, Red Region, Little Star, Plane Land, Short Man, Princess Saria, Flow Joe, Southern Flight, Daddy’s Dollar, Mary Ann, T and T, Wise Thom, King Stanley, Slim Shady, Black Beauty, Little Kevin, Miss Angalie, Blue Lightening, Royal Pay Master, Royal Progressive, Massaupequea Doctor, Red Weasel, Country Boy, Easy Lion, Perfect Return, Release the Heat, and Kodciusqko!
Speaking to Guyana Times Sport on behalf of the organizers, Keyno Henry said that it is the second year for the event with proceeds going to a good cause. “The Bushlot/ Adventure in Action Group is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and the event is a charity event with the proceeds set to go towards the ongoing school feeding programme and to pull off a huge Christmas party for the children within the community next month,” Henry said.
When asked why the committee chose horse racing as their main fundraiser, Henry said “Horse racing is really big on the Corentyne and after last year’s successful debut we decided to give the fans what they want and we expect the ususl support,” Henry stated.
To this end, he was grateful to Ansa McAl Trading, Nazrudeen Mohammed Jr of Jumbo Jet Auto Sales, Collin Elcock, Rumours Racing Stables, the National Sports Commission (NSC), Nand Persaud and Company Limited, Golden Gloves Speed Boat Service, Kris Jagdeo, Punai’s Pharmacy, Guinness Bar (Rose Hall), Touch of Class Boutique (Rose Hall), Trophy Stall (Bourda Market), Fazal Habibullah and jockeys Kumar Singh and Wayne Nelson of New York City for their assistance in making the event a success.
Longstanding horse-race commentator, Compton Sancho also weighed in on the event. Sancho said that the track is in tremendous shape and he expects records to be shattered. “The weather on the Corentyne has been very favourable to the track which is already in good shape and we will welcome fast lap times from some of the best horses in Guyana,” Sancho commented.
The ‘J’ Class race will see the horses running a distance of six furlongs with the winner set to ride away with $170,000 while the second place finisher will get $85,000 and third and fourth place winners will pocket $42,500 and $21,250 respectively.
The other races will all cover a distance of five furlongs with the ‘K’ and Lower class fetching an overall purse of $225,000; the winner of the ‘L1’ and Lower class race will get $100,000 and the ‘L2’and Lower class will see the battle for $150,000 in total up for grabs.
The unclassified event usually provides lots of excitement with reputation and bragging rights at stake and will see the winner becoming $40,000 richer.
The races will run under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority with the first event set for 13:00h.
Turfites are required to pay a $1,000 admission fee which entitles them to a race programme. Junior turfites will pay $500 and may also enjoy side attractions including bouncy castle, trampoline and merry-go-round.
