Exploring the natural side of Linden

By Utamu Belle

Anyone who’s ever had a chance to explore the natural landscape of Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) would certainly agree that it’s a nature lover’s paradise.

From waiting to be explored paths, to the mesmerising and enchanting blue lakes, wondrous hills, lush green forests; glorious hilltops and crystal-clear water springs, the serenity of the landscape is truly inspiring.

Being a nature lover myself, I love to go exploring (with safety in mind) mainly for sightseeing and the out of the hustle and bustle of the town experience.

The countless bauxite “mined-out” secluded areas provide the ultimate sightseeing experience, and in recent times, the blue lakes, which are also a product of bauxite mining, have become a regular feature for water sports activities such as kayaking; a haven for getaways, parties, weddings and celebrations or just the perfect place to relax. Then there are the scenic views of the Demerara River – but the site of the blue lakes at both Wismar and Mackenzie is perhaps one of the most captivating sceneries.

The countless hills on both the Wismar and Mackenzie shores are perfect for hiking and exploring. Lindeners particularly enjoy this experience on weekends – whether it’s with members of the family or through tour guides or local tourism agencies. With numerous unique species of birds, these outdoor spaces are also perfect for birdwatching and listening to the chirping sounds that many find so calming.

Watching the sunset from a hilltop late in the afternoon is the ultimate experience. A view of the mountains from the Block 22 or Wisroc area provides one of the most breathtaking sceneries at Wismar, Linden. The same can be said for the Amelia’s Ward or Richmond Hill areas at Mackenzie.

Climbing to a suitable spot atop a hill also reveals the most spectacular view of forested and populated lands on both shores. For years, the picturesque nature of Linden and its environs has been an escape for many who crave tranquillity away from a hectic life experience. Now, with the COVID-19 pandemic, Lindeners are rediscovering the value of nature and its benefits.

From sprawling hills to beautiful green valleys and calming blue lakes, there is something unique about Linden and its enchanting sceneries that is sure to captivate you.
