ExxonMobil/Petra/Pepsi Under14 tournament gets underway

Prior to the competition being officially opened by sponsors and organisers, the tournament kicked off with much pomp and splendour, with all of the participating schools being involved in a FIFA- like march past.
Co-Director of Petra, Troy Mendonca, in his remarks, elaborated on some of the challenges that the organization faced in trying to establish the tournament. “It gives (me) the liberty to say that, after 3 or 4 years, we at Petra organisation are trying very hard to have this tournament played at the Under14 level. It serves its purpose, which bridges the gap between the Under 11 and Under18 programmes. Because we’re faced with limited resources, we weren’t able to do it,” he explained. Mendonca took the time to thank the sponsors who have now made it possible. “At this point in time, we want to thank ExxonMobil, Ministry of Public Health, and Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) for making this possible,” he declared.

A total of 12 games were contested on Saturday at the Ministry of Education Ground

Speaking on behalf of primary sponsors ExxonMobil, Community Relations and Communications Manager Nicholas Yearwood noted that the company is elated to be on board with such an initiative. “We’re happy that Petra came to us to be the partner of choice, and we just want to wish every child here the best of luck in the tournament,” he said.
Shortly after the official kick-off was done by Yearwood, the first of 12 matches scheduled for the day began. Whilst the boys commenced their round-robin stage of the competition, the girls are currently going through a training programme being conducted by the technical staff of the Guyana Football Federation. Those sessions will last for two weeks.
The competition will continue every Saturday for the next seven weeks, beginning each time at 10hrs at the Ministry of Education Ground on Carifesta Avenue, where both boys’ and girls’ teams will be on show.
