…girlfriend in custody
A 73-year-old coconut farmer of Grant Maria’s Delight, Lower Pomeroon River, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), was shot dead at his home by a masked man.
Dead is Deonarine (only name), also known as “Russian”.
It was reported that on Friday evening about 18:30h, the man had just returned home after collecting his 47-year-old girlfriend, when he heard someone knocking on his door. Guyana Times was told when Deonarine opened the door, a masked man with a gun was standing in the entrance.
The woman, who witnessed the entire incident told the Police after seeing the gunman, she attempted to grab the gun, but he whipped out a knife, which she also grabbed.
Meanwhile, the farmer tried to flee the scene, but was chased by the gunman after the woman failed in her efforts to stop him.
This publication was told that the woman was pushed by the suspect who ran after the pensioner and shot him to the left side of his abdomen before making his escape.
The badly injured farmer was rushed to the Oscar Joseph District Hospital in Charity, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
This newspaper understands that the now dead man was a re-migrant, who returned to the Pomeroon and invested significant sums in the coconut industry. He was managing and living alone on the coconut estate. His body is at the hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
His girlfriend remains in custody, as Police continue their investigation.
Residents in the area told Guyana Times that Deonarine was a very kind person and expressed shock at the incident.
“Surely the killer came to kill and it’s not a robbery,” a neighbour said.
