Farmer remanded on narcotics possession charge

Forty-year-old Grove, East Bank Demerara resident Jamal Bacchus, who works as a cash crop farmer at Sharima, Linden, was remanded to prison for possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. Bacchus appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Wales Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Police said that on Friday last at Rockstone, Linden, the defendant was found with 77.8 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. The father of one denied the charge, but was refused bail on the grounds that he listed two different addresses after being detained. As he was being taken into Police custody, he expressed worry for his pumpkin and calloo crops, which he indicated were ready to be reaped. The matter was transferred to the Linden Magistrate’s Court, where Bacchus will next appear on August 24.
