Father drowns while trying to save children

A father died on Friday while attempting to save his two children from a watery grave, as the boat in which they were travelling capsized in the Kamarang River in Region Seven.
This dead father has been identified as 43-year-old Larchman Benjie, a farmer of Waramadong Village in Region Seven.
Based on reports reaching Guyana Times, the farmer and his two children, aged two and three, were returning from the family’s farm when their small canoe capsized midway across the river.
The father of five managed to push his two daughters to safety, but fell victim to the rough waters of the Kamarang. His body was recovered on Saturday morning.
The Benjie family had reportedly relocated to Waramadong from Jawalla so that the children could have access to education.
When contacted, Divisional Commander, Senior Superintendent Kevin Adonis, confirmed occurrence of the tragic accident, while noting that a team of Police ranks had travelled up to the area to investigate the attending circumstances. The commander noted that getting to the area will take some time because of the terrain.
Guyana Times understands that after Benjie’s body had been retrieved on Saturday morning, the farmer was thereafter laid to rest.
