Carjacking probe
As the carjacking probe continues to widen, a father and son — both welders — were on Monday charged for fraud and taken before Georgetown Magistrate Judy Latchman.
The indictments against Nigel Chung, 43, and his son, Ricky Chung, 23, both of Lot 5 Coverden, East Bank Demerara (EBD), detail that between August 7, 2017 and February 13, 2018; and between December 9, 2017 and February 10 2018, they used two vehicle chassis numbers registered to one Spacio and one Toyota Allion motorcar, knowing same to be false. The men denied the charges.
Their attorney, Dexter Todd, revealed that his clients are cooperating with the prosecution to strengthen its case into the carjacking ring, and are being charged only as a result of a misunderstanding.
The court heard from Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore that the welders, who operate at Soesdyke, EBD, reportedly had the two cars and chassis numbers taken to them to be welded on. However, Police swooped down on the workshop and the cars were seized. The vehicles were later identified by their respective owners.
Further investigations were carried out, and the two defendants had the charged brought against them.
They were each placed on $200,000 bail, and are expected to return to Court on March 12.
Earlier this month, two ex-Policemen were among others charged for carjacking as ranks finally got a breakthrough into the series of car theft.
Of the 15 persons taken into Police custody when investigators swooped down on the Lodge Housing Scheme, Georgetown home of the prime suspect in this investigation and conducted a search, Jason Harry, Shawn Archibald and Timothy Waldron have since been charged.
During that surprise raid in Lodge Housing Scheme, investigators found a black Mazda Axela motorcar with licence number PTT 2794, and have unearthed 12 certificates of registration for various vehicles. A 52-year-old woman who was at the Lodge residence has been arrested.
‘A’ Division ranks conducted a 10-hour operation at Kuru Kururu, Linden-Soesdyke Highway which resulted in six persons being arrested, including an ex-Policeman and women.
Two motor cars and a canter truck which is registered to a Barr Street, Kitty resident were also seized and lodged. The truck was loaded with the shell of a silver Toyota Spacio and a quantity of vehicle parts suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.
Police ranks from the Major Crimes Investigation Unit have also swooped down on a North Vryheid’s Lust premises on the East Coast of Demerara. It was occupied by a 29-year-old taxi driver and his 25-year-old wife, and several car mirrors with engraved licence plate numbers, beside doors, lights, wipers and other vehicle parts for Toyota Allion, Spacio and Premio motorcars, were seized.
