A source close to investigations told Guyana Times that the unit has sufficient evidence and confessions to institute charges against the four men who were implicated in the murder of the elderly couple.

He explained that once the DPP is finished with the file, the accused will make their first court appearance. Nevertheless, he related that while four men remain in Police custody, a fifth is still on the run. The men in custody, according to information, are cooperating with the Police.

The source posited that the DPP will also determine if the fifth suspect, Gavin Shepherd, called “Pepsi” can be charged in absentia. The Major Crime Unit took over the case sometime back, working on several leads. It was only last week they got the breakthrough.

Three of the perpetrators were arrested and another was arrested on Saturday. Since the arrests, the men have confessed to the murders and have given detailed accounts of how the heinous crime was committed.

The elderly couple was killed after bandits set their home ablaze on April 17, 2016.

The last man to be arrested is referred to as “Plang”, a neighbour of the deceased elderly couple. “Plang” is the alleged mastermind, who had a conversation with his crew, informing them that the rice farmers had $20 million stashed away in their Lot 16 Good Hope home.

It is believed that what propelled the men to carry out their attack was the assumed presence of this large sum of money.

On that deadly night, the young suspects climbed into the house through the veranda and ransacked the house. The elderly couple heard the commotion and raised an alarm. The rice farmers remained in their room although the perpetrators ordered them to come out. According to one of the suspects, his accomplice set a sofa alight after which he tossed a fuel cylinder in the fire, causing an explosion. The perpetrators fled through a track that led to a church and cemetery behind the couple’s home where they stood and listened to the couple in anguish screaming for help. As neighbours became aware of what was happening, they attempted to rescue the couple but to no avail. The charred remains of Mohamed and his wife were later discovered together (Bhisham Mohamed)
