– Future Stars, Sparta Boss start as favorites
On Friday night in front of a big crowd, forty odd teams battled for the final 16 qualifying spots of the Georgetown Zone of the Guinness “Greatest in the Streets”.
California Square was packed to the maximum with an unrelenting crowd made up of various supporters. However at the end of the night only 16 teams had qualified with a number of new faces set to make their debut in the annual tournament.
Despite having established themselves as a futsal powerhouse over the past year, the versatile Future Stars had to earn their spot in the final 32 and did so with ease.
Among the newcomers are GTI Ballers, Bad-a-yard, Ol Skool Ballers, Judgement Yard, Gaza Squad and Trap House among others.
They join established sides that have become household names on the futsal scene such as Sparta Boss, Goal is Money, Alexander Village and Broad Street.
If one is to judge by the turnout witnessed on Friday night at the qualifiers then the tournament is sure to be unparalleled by any other competition for the last year.
This year’s tournament will see new changes as well. Coordinators of the event revealed; “It is a new and colorful era in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Championship, which is expected to be exciting and evenly contested in every zone.”
They further disclosed, “The tournament is going through several changes which will positively impact the overall quality. Colourful uniforms, displays and balls will be utilized to give the event vibrancy, which will certainly add to the atmosphere.”
The venues for the championship are Demerara Park, National Cultural Centre Tarmac, Burnham Basketball Court, Albouystown Tarmac and the East Ruimveldt Tarmac [California Square].
The official playing dates are November 22nd, 23rd, 25th, 30th, December 2nd, 7th, 9th, 14th, with the grand finale slated for Saturday 16th.
Winner of the overall event will walk-away with $500,000 and the championship trophy. They will also represent the region in the National Playoffs.
On the other hand, the runner-up will pocket $250,000 and the respective accolade.
Meanwhile, the third and fourth place finishers for the event will collect $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding trophy.
