President Dr Irfaan Ali on Thursday revealed that engineers are currently performing a final assessment for bridging the islands of Leguan and Wakenaam.
According to the President, the bridge connecting the two islands is “…something we all dreamt of…”
The Government has been exploring the possibility of bridging the Essequibo Islands of Wakenaam and Leguan, utilising components of the old Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Currently, farmers in Leguan and Wakenaam would have to use ferries to bring their produce out to Parika to market. The additional transportation charges also affect the end price consumers pay for produce that could have been cheaper with decreased transportation costs.
A bridge connecting the two islands will not only improve the agriculture sector but will also boost the tourism potential in the region.
