Fire destroys Berbice house

A man is now homeless after a fire destroyed his home at Warren village, East Coast Berbice on Sunday morning.
Reports are that the fire started at about 03:00h but he, as caretaker of the building, was not at home at the time.
Ashrod Khan, a 54-year-old driver, has said that he had left his Warren Village home since Friday, and was staying at a friend’s home at Don Robin, the neighbouring village.
According to the New Amsterdam Fire Service, someone passing in a car saw the building on fire and contacted the fire department.
Khan told this publication that when he arrived on the scene, firefighters were already there, and the entire building was engulfed.
He said his friend whom he was visiting had received a phone call notifying him of the fire.

The building was owned by an overseas-based Guyanese who was attempting to sell the edifice for $1M and have a new building constructed on the site.
Khan said everything which he owned was lost to the fire.
“I had my ID card and my driver’s licence on me,” he said.
He believes that the burning of the three-bedroom building was an act of arson. He explained that neighbours reported to him that someone was at his home during his absence.
“But like they know that I was not home, and they go in the place. I don’t know if they went to smoke or drink, but I would go away for days, and sometimes a whole month, and nothing like this ever happen.”
The Fire Service is still investigating the cause of the fire. (G4)
