Speaking with Guyana Times, Benn recalled receiving a call from his neighbour about 21:00h informing him that his house was on fire. According to Benn, by the time he reached home, the entire house had burnt to the ground.
His neighbour, Akeela Best told this publication that she heard screams of “Fire! Fire!” and she rushed out and saw Benn’s home engulfed in flames.
“I saw the bright light while I was inside, but we didn’t really know it was a fire until the boy started hollering ‘fire! fire!’, is then when we look outside, we see the whole back of the house burning; the fire burned from the back to the front, glass started to break, the whole house gone up in flames,” Best recounted.
She said that she called the Campbellville Fire Station, but the building burnt quickly. She added that by the time the firemen arrived, the house was already burnt.
“The fire truck tek a lil time to come, but when they come, they house was already burned down; the fire was too much, till in front it deh blazing everything did done gone,” the woman relayed.
The fire is suspected to have stemmed from an alleged illegal electrical connection, but Benn is contending that it may have been deliberately set by a woman with whom he had a dispute.
The Police and the Guyana Fire Service are investigating.
