An unoccupied West Ruimveldt house in the centre of a dispute was destroyed on Tuesday night after a fire of unknown origin started and spiralled out of control.
Based on information provided, the fire started at about 08:15h at the Lot 27 Shoppers Lane, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown property.
When Guyana Times arrived at the scene, the two-storey wooden structure was completely engulfed in flames. The Guyana Fire Service, stationed a short distance away, arrived with three tenders and a squad of firefighters. However, only two were used to quell the blaze.
With no possibility of saving the structure from devastation, they proceeded to drench nearby houses with water to prevent the fire from spreading.
Stephen Clark, a relative of the owner, explained that he heard of the fire while on his way to purchase food.
According to him, it could not have started by an electrical malfunction since the power was disconnected. Clark is contending that the fire was arson since the owners were in dispute with another party to sell the building.
“I got a phone call that fire was in the street and I wonder if is my house but I never knew that it is from the distance where I was. As I come closer, I saw the glare. That was long expected,” the man stated.
This publication understands that no one resided at the property since the owners are overseas. Meanwhile, the Fire Department is still investigating the matter to determine the source.
