A dredge owner, his wife and 12-year-old niece are now homeless after a fire gutted their two-storey wooden and concrete home at Grant Akawini, Lower Pomeroon River, (Region Two), on Monday morning.
So far, Police in that district are treating the fire as suspected arson. The incident occurred between 07:00h and 09:30h on the day in question.
The dredge owner’s wife, Bevon English reportedly told investigators that her 39-year-old husband, Epston English, is presently in an interior location working, and she is usually at home with 12-year-old her niece.
The woman said she and her niece left to go to their farm, located about one mile away from her home.
However, at about 09:30h, a 53-year-old farmer reportedly saw the blaze and immediately raised an alarm. Residents formed a bucket brigade to put out the blaze but due to the intense heat, they were forced to retreat.
Meanwhile, upon arriving at the scene, English was inconsolable after seeing her house completely gutted.
An investigation has commenced to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
