Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) attached to the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) assisted in the delivery of a baby at a home on Monday, bringing the number of babies delivered by the Service’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel so far in 2026 to 10.

According to the Fire Service, EMTs Carlona Grahame, Deka Griffith, and Stacia McLeod were involved in the latest delivery, demonstrating their training and readiness to respond to medical emergencies outside of hospitals.
Guyana Times reported in August that EMS personnel had safely delivered nine babies since the start of the year, including seven girls and two boys.
At the time, the Fire Service said seven of the deliveries occurred in A Division, while two were recorded in C Division. Those babies were delivered by trained EMS personnel while their mothers were being transported by ambulance to hospital.
The latest case brings the total to 10, although the sex of the newborn and the location of the delivery were not disclosed in the Fire Service’s statement.
While the GFS is primarily associated with firefighting, its EMS personnel also provide pre-hospital care to people experiencing medical emergencies. This includes situations in which a patient requires immediate assistance before reaching a healthcare facility.
According to the GFS, emergency childbirth can require EMTs to act quickly, assess the condition of both mother and baby, and provide the necessary care while arranging further medical attention.
The Fire Service commended the three EMTs for their professionalism and dedication, noting the importance of their training in responding to such emergencies.
