First Lady urges citizens not to fall prey of scholarship scam
First Lady Sandra Granger is again cautioning citizens to look out for persons purporting to be running a scholarship fund in her name, while calling for the scammers to be brought to justice.
Reports have surfaced that persons have been contacted via phone calls and text messages from telephone number (592) 642-2236 with requests for payment in return for the opportunity to gain scholarships under the name of First Lady Sandra Granger.
Addressing the issue, First Lady Sandra Granger reiterated that no such scholarship fund exists and that persons should not hand over any money to anyone claiming otherwise.
“There is a woman going around who is impersonating me, and this has been going on for months. She has an assistant and she is calling people and saying that she is me and duping them using Mobile Money” the First Lady explained.
According to Mrs Granger, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been lost by many and despite the publicity that this has been getting from the press, it still continues to happen.
“We have publicised this in the press, we have done it on social media but of recent about three days ago, a woman called because the scammer is allegedly now conning people telling them that she is able to grant visas and this is throughout the country, it started in the interior locations and now she is on the coast,” Granger said.
All Government scholarships are granted through the Public Service Ministry, and as such, the First Lady is calling on citizens to be cautious not to fall prey of the fraudsters.
In one instance, a woman sent some $90,000 to the scammer in order to have her daughter and niece granted scholarships.
The First Lady is assuring that when the culpable persons are found, they will be brought to justice.
“Please tell everybody in plain language that this woman is a crook! And when caught, she will be brought to justice,” the First Lady said.
