With its 12-seat majority in the 17-member Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), the PPP/C took both the Chairman and Vice Chairman posts.
Vilma Audray Da Silva was elected as Regional Chairman on Monday at the RDC Boardroom in Anna Regina, thus making her the first female to lead the region. Da Silva is a prominent farmer and businesswoman of Grant Beach Profit, Lower Pomeroon River with years of experience in farming, packaging, manufacturing and marketing.
However, Humace Oudit, a Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of Oaths to Affidavits was elected as Vice Chairman. He is also a long-serving senior member of the PPP/C local branch office in Anna Regina.
Those elected as Councillors on the PPP/C side of the bench are Arnold N L Adams, Faraz Baksk, Ragunauth Doodnauth, Melrose Henry, Toolsie Narine, Lloyd J Pereira, Verina E Rasheed, Dr Ranjeev Singh, Shaleenie F Sukdeo and Pastor Ronald Thompson.
The Councillors on the APNU/AFC side of the bench include Trevor W Cozier, Ciselyn A Jonas, Mark A Mc Lean, Yonette N Obermuller and Nathram Persaud.
Local Government and Regional Development Minister, Nigel Dharamlall, who was present at the elections and swearing-in of Councillors, called on the newly elected RDC to work together.
He noted that the time for campaigning is over and as such, the Councillors on both sides of the House have an obligation to the people who elected them to office.
The Minister pledged his support to the new Executive and urged them to not be afraid to call on him at any time.
Further, he stated that the RDC and the Government must work to lower the cost of production in the agricultural sector.
