A 37-year-old fisherman appeared at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court to answer the charge of having an illegal firearm in his possession.
Deocharan Das, of New Providence, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was ready to him by Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer.
The charge alleges that on August 26, 2019, at Wash Clothes, Mahaicony, ECD, he had a 12-gauge, single-barrel shotgun when he is not a licensed firearm holder.
According to information, on the day in question, Police ranks on mobile patrol went to a location where they saw Das on a wooden boat. It is alleged that, upon seeing the Police, Das threw the firearm overboard, but the ranks managed to retrieve the firearm, and as such, he was arrested.
The Magistrate remanded Das to prison until September 30, and transferred the matter to Cove and John Magistrate Fabayo Azore’s Court.
