– boat owner, 2 others arrested
A fisherman was found dead in a boat with his throat slit at Number 65 Village, Corentyne, Berbice on Thursday, suspected of having been murdered by a colleague following a misunderstanding.
The dead man has been identified as Devanand Jailall, called “Shetty”, a fisherman of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. According to information received, the now dead man and a colleague had a misunderstanding, which quickly escalated into a fight.
During the scuffle, both men reportedly armed themselves with knives, but the now dead man was overpowered by the suspect who dealt him several stabs to the body, including his hand, neck, and chest.
Upon realising what he had done, the suspect attempted to stop the bleeding and as such, wrapped the injured man’s neck with a bed sheet. At the time of discovery of the body, the sheet was still wrapped around Jailall’s neck.
The boat’s owner, Alex Younge, also called “Roberto”, reportedly told Police he went to the station to report the matter immediately after receiving the news. Nevertheless, the owner and two other men were arrested and were being interrogated. The main suspect has fled.
Jailall was taken to the Skeldon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Dhanmattie Rampersaud, a sister of the now dead man, told reporters that her brother had gone to visit her and his son at her Port Mourant home, but they were not at home.
The woman further noted that her sister-in-law called and informed her that her brother was found with his throat slit and without hesitation, she rushed to the scene.
When she arrived there, the body had already been taken to the Skeldon Hospital.
It is still unclear why the men were arguing. (Andrew Carmichael)
