Fisherman granted bail on assault charge

Thirty-seven-year-old Umar Jumai also called “Muggie”, a fisherman of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, was on Friday granted bail in the sum of $25,000 on an assault charge. Jumai made his virtual appearance before Alex Moore at the No 51 Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was reportedly arrested on August 17, 2021, and charged with assault causing actual bodily harm contrary to Section 30 (a) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:02.

He is expected to make his next court appearance on October 7, 2021.
Also making his appearance before Magistrate Moore was 45-year-old Roopesh Shiwlall also known as “Jack”, a labourer also of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice.
He was slapped with a simple larceny charge which was committed on August 25. He reportedly pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him. As such, he was released on 75,000 bail and will make his next court appearance on October 18.
