Fishermen remanded on piracy charge

Four fishermen were on Monday remanded to prison by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus on a charge of piracy.
Sanjai Jangbir, 18; Vishnu Jangbir, 20; Rajendra Parsaram, 19, and Mahindra Sancharan, 25, were charged jointly with the offence.
It was alleged that on February 9, 2018, while in the Cuyuni River, the men, armed with knives and guns, robbed the vessel of Anna Teresa of $4.6 million in items belonging to Vickash Balkissoon.
Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, in a bail application, requested that his clients be released on reasonable bail, citing that his clients were beaten by the Police to confess to the allegations and to also sign a confession statement. However, Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence.
The men were remanded to prison until March 27, 2018.
