Fitness competitions key to readiness, mission success – GDF Chief

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has concluded its First Quarterly Fitness Competition for 2026, with the 1 Infantry Battalion securing first place in the male category after a strong overall performance. The 3 Infantry Battalion placed second following a consistent showing, while the 31 Special Forces Squadron finished third to complete the top three positions. In the female category, the Guyana National Reserve A Team claimed first place. The Coast Guard took second position, with the Guyana National Reserve B Team finishing third.

In a social media post on the GDF’s page, it was stated that the competition, held at Base Camp Stephenson, tested participants through a series of physically and mentally demanding activities aimed at assessing endurance, coordination and performance under pressure.
According to the GDF, the event is part of its ongoing efforts to evaluate operational readiness and maintain high fitness standards across the Force.
Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan, said such competitions are critical in assessing readiness and ensuring ranks remain capable of responding to evolving operational demands. He urged participants to continue striving for excellence, noting that fitness, discipline and teamwork remain essential to mission success and the overall effectiveness of the Force.
