Fmr Reg 6 REO on $200K bail over Nigg fatal accident

Former Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), Dr Veerasammy Ramayya, was on Tuesday granted $200,000 station bail as police continue their investigation into the fatal accident at Nigg Public Road, Corentyne, which claimed the life of 42-year-old Ishwarnauth Bisram. The case file, according to reports, has been sent for legal advice on the way forward. Ramayya, 79, had been taken into police custody following the accident in which Bisram was struck while crossing the Nigg Public Road on Saturday evening.
It was reported that Bisram had reportedly stopped at Nigg to purchase food on his way home when he was struck by a motorcar while crossing the public road. Police confirmed that the accident occurred at about 21:55h on Saturday and involved motor car PZZ 1906, owned and driven by former politician Dr Ramayah. Police stated that the car was proceeding along the roadway at a normal rate of speed when Bisram allegedly walked across the road and into the path of the motor car.
The doctor and the police stated that the brakes were applied in an effort to avoid a collision, but despite his efforts, the front portion of the motorcar collided with Bisram, thus causing him to fall onto the roadway and receive injuries to his body.
He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the motor car, which gave a reading of 11 micrograms, which is below the legal alcohol consumption level.
His death has left his family grieving, with his mother, Lilawattie Ramnarace, among relatives who spoke about the devastating impact his sudden passing has had on the family.
