Food For The Poor contributes to Psychiatric, New Amsterdam Regional hospitals
A total of 21 executive chairs for the staff of the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital (NARH) along with other utensils and items to be utilised by staff and inpatients of the National Psychiatric Hospital were handed over to Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence. This donation was received from Food For The Poor (FFTP), Guyana Inc.
Minister Lawrence received these items on behalf of the Director of Health Services in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), Jevaughn Stephens. FFTP representative and the Public Health Ministry’s Focal Point in the region, Alex Foster, said this is a usual gesture by FFTP and is warmly welcomed by the region.
As the NGO’s representative in the region, Foster indicated that where needs are or whenever requests are made, FFTP steps up to the plate and meets the

Items contributed to the Psychiatric Hospital include two pots, one industrial stove, one tiller and other agricultural tools, clothing, bed sheets, towels, toiletries for patient’s hygiene and material for art and craft, including fabric paint.
Foster pointed out that, “The patients on a daily basis need to be involved in several activities so Food For The Poor visited last month and decided that they would like to contribute and enhance the operation at the Psychiatric Hospital; this is an ongoing operation between Food For The Poor and the Ministry of Public Health.”
On behalf of the hospitals, acting Matron of the NARH, Suzette August and acting Administrator Luan Sulker were both pleased with FFTP’s continued support.
Minister Lawrence has been stressing to regional health administrations not to depend solely on Government for an efficient and effective service delivery.
She has emphasised how important and critical it is for community involvement since Government cannot do it alone. Therefore, this contribution was welcome.
