Football fever took its toll on Guyana on Sunday after several corporate giants gave local patrons the chance to view the 2018 World Cup action on big screens.
And as such, the FIFA 2018 World Cup was celebrated Guyanese-style in the heart of the city with cold drinks, music and a great atmosphere. Corporate giants ANSA McAL and Banks DIH did their part to give back to their patrons by staging a large-screen viewing of the highly-anticipated final match at key points in the city such as the Stabroek Market Square and on the Marriott beach front.
At both venues, fans could be seen decked out in their favoured team’s attire while
cheering on the foreign teams and their favourite players.
Aside from watching the power-packed match-up, patrons could have been seen dabbling in a game of football or doving competitions. Differences were put aside in an exhibition of unity through sport, as there were no serious squabbles recorded. Needless to say, the fans were content when the final whistle blew.
Long after the game ended, many Guyanese fans stuck around to get in a last word with their newfound friends or family members who accompanied them to the event. Needless to say, the festivities continued into the night and one would believe that it was Guyana who had just won the World Cup.
Guyana Times Sport caught up with ANSA McAL Guyana Marketing Director Troy Cadogan, who shared his thoughts on Sunday’s game. “I thought it was a great game; I thought that Croatia was actually overmatched today. France just had too many weapons coming at them at the same time,” he stated.
Decked out in a French football t-shirt, Cadogan joked about the massive support that was shown by the Guyanese football fans, “I’ve been in this job a while and
this has been a fantastic event in terms of turnout. We’ve seen a lot of team representation; I didn’t even know we had so many Croatians in Guyana,” he said.
As many would know by now, the French national football team cruised to a 4-2 win over the underdog Croatian team to be crowned the 2018 FIFA World Cup Champions. (Jemima Holmes)
