The Petra Organisation in collaboration with the Guyana Beverage Inc (GBI) through the Turbo energy drink brand on Tuesday handed over the trophies and cash prizes to the various winners of the inaugural Turbo Knockout Football tournament.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony held in the conference room of GBI at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, Co-Director of the Petra Organisation, Troy Mendonca pointed out that the tournament was a resounding success especially following up from the Corona Invitational tournament earlier this year.
“In the end football won, we had a great response from the fans, the players and the clubs” he explained.
Camptown FC’s captain Lezhan Lord receives the winning trophy along with the $500,000 cash prize from GBI’s Commercial Manager, Samuel Arjune as some of his teammates and other officials look on
Mendonca also noted that the tournament revealed that sub associations outside of Georgetown have well organized teams as it also showed on the field. He also pointed out that since there was an ongoing league (Elite League) the knockout cup creates an environment of competitiveness which helps add to the value of the teams as they would up their quality of football.
In his closing statement he revealed that the point at which the tournament started to where it ended was remarkable. Mendonca promised to work on improving the tournament in the future. He also commended GBI on coming on board and lending a helping hand in contributing to football in the country.
Meanwhile, GBI Commercial Manager Samuel Arjune thanked the players and Petra for “coordinating and pulling off a well-organized tournament.”
Arjune went on to express his and his company’s belief in the holistic development of sport in Guyana stating; “We at GBI stand ready to support sport development in Guyana.”
Camptown FC stunned Police FC in the final to cart off the winner’s trophy and $500,000 just a couple of weeks ago while Pouderoyen trumped Grove Hi-tech to take home top honours over Grove Hi-Tech as well as the $125,000 up for grabs. Grove Hi-tech had to settle for the fourth place trophy and $75,000.
Camptown’s goalie Richie Richards snared the tournament’s MVP accolade for his outstanding performances between the uprights.
