Footballer remanded on robbery charge

A footballer, who was remanded to prison on a new robbery charge, one day after he was posted $900,000 bail for nine counts of armed robberies, was on Tuesday released on $600,000 bail at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Omalo Williams

Twenty-seven-year-old Omalo Williams of Lot 83 Leopold Street, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.
The first charge against Williams stated that on May 25, 2019 at Smyth and Leopold Streets, Georgetown, while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed Odwin Lowenfield of a phone valued at $81,000 and $25,000 in cash.
It was further alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he robbed Latoya Lowenfield of one phone valued at $170,000.
Prosecutor Adduni Innis objected to bail, stating that while the defendant was out on bail for nine robbery charges, he committed the new offence. The Prosecutor added that the defendant was released from prison in May after spending 11 months on remand for armed robberies.
The man’s attorney, during his bail application, told the Court that his client is not a flight risk and, therefore, bail should be granted in a reasonable sum. He further stated that his client is willing to comply with any bail conditions that the Court sets.
After listening to submissions, Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus granted the defendant $600,000 bail and the case will continue on July 8. As a condition for bail, Williams would have to report to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday until the case concludes.
Williams had previously appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for a series of armed robberies committed in the Leopold Street, Georgetown area. He had denied all the charges and was granted $900,000 bail.
