Former banking executive Ahmad Khan passes away

Ahmad Murtza Khan, who joined the Canadian-owned Barclays Bank in 1972 fresh out of high school and worked his way to the top of his profession, passed away on Monday after a brief illness. He was 62 years old.

At Barclays, he rose to become a supervisor and after it became the Government-owned Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry, he rose to the level of manager. He later moved over to the Indigenously founded Demerara Bank in the mid-1990’s and eventually was their General Manager. At the end of his banking career, he was the CEO; Director and Secretary of The New Building Society.

His 45-plus years’ professional career in effect was an encapsulation of the transition of Guyana’s banking system from a colonial one to that of an independent country.

He leaves to mourn his wife, two children, two grandchildren and hundreds of friends in and out of his profession who valued his low-key demeanour.
