Home Letters Former Govt Minister attacking snr management at GGMC
Dear Editor,
The more I live in Guyana, the more I get the impression that Guyana is not a real place when it comes to some politicians, as they seek to strengthen a firm grip on Government Ministries and regulating agencies for their own personal benefit.
Recently, there was a Facebook Live hosted by the former junior Minister of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes, wherein she made flagrant attempts to influence the top management of a leading regulatory agency, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).
Ms. Broomes was first a miner, and then became a politician. However, she still seeks to enjoy influence by criticising the top management of the Commission, and even went as far as singling out specific officers, whom she claims to be unqualified and incompetent. This, I believe, is far from the truth, as I believe Ms Broomes is aiming to destabilise the top management of the Commission by making other junior and middle management staff believe they are disenfranchised, and should be promoted over the current crop of managers. This is what you call ‘state craft’, and Ms Broomes should be called out for her attempts at politically influencing the management of a state entity, especially since she is not in Government and is a full-time miner.
Why is the former Minister afraid of the current top management of the Commission?
Editor, while any civil-minded person would support transparency and equal employment opportunities in the Public Sector, I strongly condemn the unchecked comments by this former Government Minister to influence, misguide, and turn professionals within the GGMC against each other.
Ms Broomes seems bent on instigating mischief and creating disarray at a very important regulatory agency. Therefore, I call upon the Ministry that has responsibility for the GGMC and the Board of GGMC to monitor this situation closely, and to ensure staff is appraised of the process and selection of top management.
The Ministry and the GGMC Board should take a strong stance on that outside and inside the Commission, this engagement in malicious attacks against professional managers of GGMC. Let goodwill and professional conduct prevail at GGMC, in order that all miners be served.
Sincerely,
Randy King (Jnr)
