Former GuySuCo Chairman dies

…touched everyone’s life – family recalls

Former Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) Chairman and Mashramani co-founder, Michael Anthony John Brassington who died on Sunday was remembered fondly by his family members.

“Mike”, as he was called, was said to have celebrated life and touched everyone’s lives. He was described as “selfless, generous and always present which can be attested by anyone who knew him”.

“He set a standard for which his children can only aspire to achieve, both personally and professionally, and he will be missed every day for the rest of their lives,” his family observed.

Brassington was born October 22, 1936 in Georgetown, the last of 10 children born to Edward and Walterine Brassington. His career had its genesis in banking, with him last being the Assistant Guyana Manager of Barclays Bank. He moved on to found Guyana Refrigerators Limited (GRL) and Ideal, where he served as Managing Director from 1980 to 2017.

He also served as head of the Barge Inquiry and also on numerous Boards such as Bitco.

Other notable achievements included a post as presidential adviser to then President Hugh Desmond Hoyte. In 1969, “Mike” was one of the founding members to introduce Mashramani to the Guyanese people in Linden. Today, Mashramani is an annual celebration that we Guyanese people look forward to every year.

He was an avid golfer and spent most of his Saturdays at the Lusignan Golf Club as a player and President for over 20 years. He also loved to ride the numerous motorcycles he owned over the years. Brassington passed away on Sunday and leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Gloria, and his four children, Lucianna, Michael Jr, Marilu and Paul, and his son-in-law, Xavier and his two grandchildren, Eva and Luc.
