The firearm that is suspected to be used in a plot to rob a Chinese supermarket
Four men from Georgetown were arrested on Thursday afternoon after police intercepted their vehicles and uncovered an unlicensed firearm, thwarting what is believed to have been a planned robbery at a Chinese supermarket in New Amsterdam.
The suspects, aged 18 to 29, were travelling in two motorcars from Georgetown when they were stopped around 14:00h by a senior police officer and ranks at the Berbice River Bridge access road. A search of one of the vehicles led to the discovery of a .38 revolver hidden in a compartment beneath the steering wheel, along with five matching rounds of ammunition.
The men were immediately taken into custody and are assisting police with the ongoing investigation. Authorities believe the swift interception prevented a serious crime from occurring.
