Starting today the anticipated Inter Guiana Goodwill Games (IGG) will get underway here and experienced campaigner and captain of the national male volleyball team, Samuel Fraser, is optimistic that his team will retain its title as they open competition this afternoon at the National Gymnasium against Suriname.
In his first outing as captain, Fraser, told this publication that he is impressed with the team’s fitness and technical skills and due to those facets he believes his team will overshadow Suriname in the two best of three series.
The eighteen year old, who is in his fourth year in national colours hails from Number One Village Corentyne Berbice said his team is not just a fit unit but is extremely strong in both offense and defence.
The national team comprises 12 players, all of whom hail from the Ancient County with the majority coming out of the Guysuco Training Centre. They have been together in a week long camp which takes them straight into the Games and have been working on areas such as ball handling, mental strength, fitness and other areas which the coach Levi Nedd saw the need to be polished.
On Thursday morning they were engaged in their final training session, where they focused on fitness and ball handling. Subsequent to that the team were engaged in team discussion.
Fraser shares similar sentiments with the President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation, Retired Coast Guard Commander John Flores, who also believes that Guyana male team will win the title.
This year the IGG will be without French Guiana, so just Guyana and Suriname will be competing in seven sport discipline over the next three days.
