Fraser, Edward top BVA awards

Samuel Fraser, Guyana under-19 captain and Sheliza Edwards were named as players of the year (2016) by the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) at its inaugural award ceremony held on Saturday at Port Mourant Community Centre (PMTC).

The event included individual and club performances as well as special awards.

The criteria used for selecting the various winners came from three nominations in

each of the categories; the person or club had to be a regular participant in BVA’s events for 2016; show discipline and fair play, return quality performances and show commitment.

Devindra Latchman was named the most outstanding player in BVA competitions, Andy Rohoman top junior player, Ian Bagot of PMTC most disciplined player, PMTC the male club of the year, Corriverton Jets the female club of the year and Tain Humanitarian the junior club of the year.

Devindra Budhu was named best referee while there was a special award for sponsor of the year and despite a number of names mentioned. Deonarine Balram (Shane), Proprietor of the Balram Shane General Store of Rose Hall Town was unanimously selected as the sponsor of the year.

Earlier this month, President of BVA, Levi Nedd, said the association’s 2017 focus is on three main areas of development; Schools Development, Females Development and Beach Development as they aim to make the sport more popular locally.

Nedd said the idea to have the sport in the school curriculum is to provide students with knowledge of how to actually play the sport from nursery to tertiary.

Last year was a challenging but successful year for the sport in Berbice, but the highlighted moment was the triumph by Guyana male team which comprised only Berbician at the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) held here.

The association also manage to field teams at local and international tournaments which also included competition in neighbouring Brazil in December.

The award ceremony was sponsored by Banks DIH, DDL, ANSA McAL, Chavez Entertainment Bar, Archway Snackette, J’s Supermarket, Dhanzie’s Auto Sales and Boutique, A. Sain and Son Supermarket and Naz’s Shopping Centre Rose Hall.

The BVA season opener is set for Saturday at the Blairmont Community Centre Ground, West Bank Berbice with the Aswell Mohabir Volleyball Tournament.
