Frequent cancellations, delays of AA flights worry Govt

…service quality “untenable” – Tourism Ministry

The Tourism, Industry and Commerce Ministry on Friday sounded its concerns in regards to the frequent flight cancellations by American Airlines.
In addition to this, the Ministry revealed that the Government has been in receipt of a number of complaints about the manner in which customers are treated when there are cancellations by the airline.
On average, 44 per cent of American Airlines flights from Guyana over the last six months have reportedly been delayed, while an average of two flights have been cancelled monthly.
“While the Ministry is appreciative of the fact the AA continues to serve the Guyana route, this quality of service is untenable and not in keeping with Government’s business, tourism and developmental agenda,” a statement from the Ministry indicated.
“The Government supports AA operating in Guyana but stresses that poor treatment of passengers is unacceptable,” the statement further noted.
Moreover, the Ministry is encouraging passengers who have been experiencing difficulties receiving refunds for flight cancellations to file official complaints with the Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission so that their issues can be documented and formally addressed.

Direct flights
On November 6, with Inter-Caribbean Airways announcing a new direct Guyana to Barbados flight, the Government has made it clear that it will continue to incentivise and support increased interconnectivity when it comes to flights between Guyana the rest of the region, and the world.
Last week, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said that the Government is hard at work facilitating increased flight routes that will directly connect Guyana to various destinations.
The Ministry also noted that Guyana welcomes both new and longstanding partners in the aviation sector and looks forward to working with all operators to ensure continuously improved services and viable and sustainable operations. (G2)
