Friendship Secondary record convincing victory against Xenon
GCB/National Secondary School Cricket League 2016-17
– Defending champions, Chase Academy among winners
Friendship Secondary School defeated Xenon Academy to start their 2016-17 Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/ National Secondary School Cricket League campaign off to a winning start.
Played on Wednesday at the Everest Cricket Club ground at Carifesta Avenue, Friendship scored 138 after 20 overs. Jamal Scott top scored with 38 including six fours and was supported by his skipper Orlando Ghisiawan, who notched 24 with three boundaries. Bowling for Xenon Leonard Thomas snared 3-1 from four overs.
In reply Xenon were dismissed for a paltry 57, with only Thomas showing fight by scoring 14 while Ghisiawan and Scott returned to be their opponents’ chief wreckers with figures of 4-8 from 3.3 overs and 3-9 from two overs respectively.
Due to Scott and Ghisiawan’s efforts their school won the match by 81 runs.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday reigning champions Chase Academy registered their second consecutive victory to advance to the next round when they defeated The Bishops’ High School (BHS) at GNIC ground.
The defending Champions were too good for BHS, dismissing them for 115 in 28.5 overs. Troy Persaud followed up his unbeaten 74 in his first match with a top-score of 35 and Sachin Ramroop supported him with 22. Bowling for Chase Academy, Dwain Dick bagged 5-16 while Tyrese Trescot and Sachin Singh took 2-14 and 2-16 respectively.
In reply, Chase Academy raced to 116/1, winning by nine wickets. Sachin Singh again led the way with an unbeaten 79 to follow up the 101 he scored in his first match.
At the Everest Cricket Club ground, Diamond Secondary School racked up 197/3 in 30 overs on the back of 12-year old Mavendra Dindyal’s classy 82. The pint size opener stroked 11 sweetly timed boundaries during his innings. Akeem Hendricks supported well with 44. Shoaib Roop took 2-22 bowling for Golden Grove Secondary.
Golden Grove could only make 72 all out in their reply. Dindyal returned with the ball to bamboozle the Golden Grove batsmen on his way to impressive figures of 5-4.
Queen’s College (QC) won the toss and chose to bowl against Richard Ishmael Secondary at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground. Richard Ishmael made 105/6 in 20 overs. Juspice Jones top scored with 24 while Tariq Hendricks made 20. Bowling for QC, Amos Sarwan took 2-14.
In reply, Queen’s College fell short of their target by seven runs as they could only get to 98/9 when their overs expired.
Bowling for Richard Ismael Secondary, Juspice Jones had 3-9 and Brandon Ramnarine took 2-18.
Kingston High School outplayed School of Nations at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground; dismissing them for a paltry 41 in 10.2 overs. Bowling for Kingston High School, Mark Sukhai bagged 5-5 while Meshack Soffleigh claimed 4-4. Kingston High School hit off the runs in 6.7 overs, finishing on 43/2 with Meshack Soffleigh making 16.
At the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) ground, St Mary’s thumped Marian Academy by seven wickets. Batting first Marian Academy was routed for 42 in 10.4 overs.
Akeem Christmas was the pick of the bowlers with 4/15 while Alex Rogers took 2-1 and Kester Mc Allister had 2-8. In reply, St Mary’s galloped to the target in 3.4 overs; finished on 45/3 with Steffon Wilson making an unbeaten 18.
The NSSCL continues today with Brickdam Secondary coming up against St Stanislaus College at the Demerara Cricket Club, Richard Ishmael Secondary against Kingston High School at Georgetown Cricket Club and Hope Secondary against Golden Grove Secondary at Enterprise Cricket Club ground.
