At the end of the first double-header of the GFF ‘Always’ National Women’s Development League (WDL), Fruta Conquerors FC solidified popular opinion of their being a competitive force in football when both their first and second order teams comprehensively defeated opponents they respectively faced.
In the first match, Fruta Conquerors “B” team defeated Foxy Ladies 8-2. A hat-trick from Annastacia Horsham, who scored in the 8th, 17th and 41st minutes; a brace from Shamya Daniels, scored in the 48th and 49th minutes; and a goal apiece from Jammaica Hunte (7th), Amanda Mc Kenzie (31st) and Alleia Alleyne (26th) were what produced this result.
In response, Foxy Lady FC players Shontel Greene and Shamika Marcus made their mark on the board with goals scored respectively in the 24th and 37th minutes.
In the second match, which began at 16:00hrs, a sextuplet of goals from National Player Lekeisha Pearson saw Fruta Conquerors ‘’A” demolish Buxton Youth Developers 15-0. Pearson scored in the 2nd, 17th, 20th, 37th, 43rd and 50th minutes to set the pace for a comprehensive win.
Her performance was complemented by that of Tiandi Smith, whose helmet trick was compiled by goals scored in the 1st, 9th, 14th and 48th minutes.
Then the demolition of Buxton Youth Developers was accentuated by a hat trick from Odessa Romeo, her goals being scored in the 10th, 11th and 21st minutes; and Selena Chan and Kendra Thomas registered goals in the 25th and 36th minutes respectively.
Prior to the start of the match, held at the Tucville Ground in Georgetown, the teams were greeted by GFF President Wayne Forde and other GFF officials. Forde also did the official kickoff.
Among other things, the WDL seeks to significantly increase player population across Guyana; act as a base of the Talent Identification Recruitment pathway; and produce players for the GFF national teams.
This development league will be played in 11 ‘regions’, including Upper Demerara, Essequibo, Madhia, Berbice, Bartica and Moruca. Matches in the other regions are scheduled to begin on November 3.
